School Sucks!

What’s the difference between education and schooling?  Mark Twain said to “…never let your schooling interfere with your education”.  Was he being quaint or is there really something to it?  On today’s show, I interview the founder of School Sucks Podcast, Brett Voinette, about this very subject.  But wait, there’s more!  I talk about why you should always hang with a friend who is expert in removing blood from white shirts in public bathrooms, getting punched in the face by my date at a black tie party, and I brag about my daughters for a few minutes.

On a more personal note:

A few years ago I worked for the Postal Service as a Letter Carrier. One of the only things that kept me sane was listening to podcasts. My friend Jason turned me onto a podcast called “School Sucks Podcast”.   This was the first piece of overtly Libertarian media I had been exposed to. I was fascinated by the host, Brett Voinette, and his philosophical discourse and sometimes irreverent treatment of highly intellectual dialogues.  From there I discovered a few other podcasts, namely, Free Domain Radio by Stefan Molyneaux, WTF Podcast by Marc Maron, The Adam Carolla Show, This American Life, Wait, Wait , Don’t Tell Me…

During Ron Paul’s 2008 and 2012 runs for president, I was both massively inspired by the increasing mainstreaming of Libertarian ideas. I was also super frustrated at how shitty Libertarians – politicians and pundits – are at marketing their ideas. I made up my mind that at some point in the future, I’d get involved in the media and find some way to put the sex back in Libertarianism.  By no means am I claiming to have done that yet – but the write up on my 2013 Arty Award may hint in that direction in my own weird way.

Without getting hooked on podcasts via Brett’s podcast, I wouldn’t have become so passionate about libertarian media. Without Without the steady diet of podcasts, I would never have thought to start doing stand up comedy. Had I not done stand up comedy, I would never have started the  live on stage version of The Paul Duane Show.  Had I not done the stage show, I never would have been offered my own radio show.  Brett Voinette is the first domino in a long line of cascading dominoes in my life, dominos that continue falling in sequence.  It was a treat and an honor to speak with him on the air today.

This has nothing to do with the education…

….or does it?
